Interviewer: Your film (News From the Village, 1975) is critical of the regime in Senegal?

Safi Faye: Of the elite class, yes. I have always wondered why we are born…why we live or die without any pleasure. We use all our physical force and still go hungry. I cannot bear that.

Interviewer: And the government reaction?

Safi Faye: My film wasn’t released in Senegal. It is seen elsewhere.

Interviewer: And the film is banned?

Safi Faye: Yes. But I think it will survive through time. It is a comparison of what was and will be. I’m sure it will be seen in Senegal one day.
